ACA’s Section 1557 Rule Protects Against Discrimination In Healthcare

The Department of Education and Department of Justice weren’t the only agencies to release important guidance today.

The Department of Health and Human Services also issued a new rule on Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The rule provides important nondiscrimination protections for women and LGBT people in health facilities, programs, and activities that receive federal funding under the ACA.

Last year, we submitted comments on the proposed rule.  Today, we are pleased to report that HHS rejected calls to create a new religious exemption under the rule that would have resulted in discrimination on the basis of sex.
